When a site is prone to flooding, there are certain things can be done to help restore the floodplain so that it can give the river room to move, slow down the water, and prevent nearby homes and other properties from flood damage.

While these sites are primarily designed to help prevent flooding, there are many opportunities for people to enjoy them when they are not flooded.

Here is a list of considerations for flood prone sites. Some of these are best practices, and some of these are required:

DO consider:

- open space and trails

- vegetated buffers

- restored habitat

- restrooms

-

Don't include:

- pavement or parking

- structures that can be moved in a flood, such as buildings or fencing (unless required by local laws)
